Traits are unique features obtainable through hatching and breeding dragons that can change the appearance or affect the stats of a dragon. Traits are divided into two different groups: cosmetic and genetic.
Cosmetic traits, as their name suggests, do not affect the stats of a dragon, but rather its appearance.
Genetic traits affect a dragon's stats either positively or negatively. Genetic traits also have tiers.
Cosmetic traits[]
Cosmetic traits affect the appearance of a dragon and come in either auras, overlays, or both. Overlay cosmetic traits, such as Albinism, affect all colors, including permanent colors, on a dragon. With the exception of the Platinum cosmetic trait, overlay cosmetic traits will not affect Legendary color.
Most cosmetic traits can only be obtained through breeding or Co-Hatching. Some cosmetic traits can only be bred through combinations of other cosmetic traits. If a dragon or both dragons have a cosmetic trait, then the chances of the cosmetic trait passing down to the offspring will be increased.
Event cosmetic traits obtainable from hatching eggs or breeding dragons become unobtainable on dragons without those traits after the cosmetic trait's respective event is over.[1] This however, excludes eggs that are explicitly able to hatch dragons with select traits (ex. Sun Chaos Egg).
If a dragon has a cosmetic trait, it will be unable to removed, however it will be replaced if the player feeds the dragon a trait potion.
There are currently 17 non-event cosmetic traits and 25 event-exclusive cosmetic traits:

Genetic traits[]
Genetic traits affect the stats of a dragon and can either be positive or negative.
All positive genetic traits can be obtained naturally, however higher tier genetic traits must be bred through the combination of the same lower tier version(s) of that genetic trait. A genetic trait's tier will start at 1 and can go up to 10.
For example, if two parent dragons have the same trait with the same tier, the offspring will have a chance of obtaining that same trait with the same tier. The offspring will also have a chance of receiving that same trait either one level higher or lower (if applicable), with higher-leveled traits being more difficult to achieve. The chances of obtaining higher level traits becomes more difficult as the trait number increases, however the chances for lower-level traits does not.
When hatched or obtained through non-breeding means, a dragon will come with 0-2 positive traits. Dragons can obtain new positive or negative traits with a slight chance through breeding. Dragons can have up to 4 positive traits and 2 negative traits.

Trivia[]
- Traits were added in the Dragon Genetics update on February 2nd, 2024, at 6:40 PM EST.
- Genetic traits function similarly to the removed statistical buffs and debuffs on health, damage, speed, and defense, which would range from -10 to +10.
- The [Error:Cosmetic] cosmetic trait could originally be obtained by breeding any two dragons together with a very small chance. It was accidentally added May 1st, 2024, however on May 2nd, the trait was made unobtainable, and any dragons with the trait prior to the change kept the trait. The trait was said to be a work in progress during the time.[2]
- When the Ghost Aura and Headless cosmetic traits were released, they each had an inherit chance of 25%. This percentage was changed to 0% sometime during October 15th, 2024.
- The Merge Lab in the Halloween Event 2024 was able to produce generation one Halloween event dragons (excluding the Skelltor) with any non-event cosmetic trait, excluding Aura, Electric, Inflamed, and Shadow.
- On December 13th, 2024, all regular cosmetic traits and all inheritable event cosmetic traits had their inherit chances lowered. The chances were changed when the Frosted cosmetic trait was added and returned to normal when the Winter Event 2024 ended.
